Nine years ago, my roommate, Courtney Richardson, and I had an idea.
As student-athletes at the University of Michigan, we recognized a challenge many athletes face, finding meaningful career exploration opportunities while balancing the demands of training, competition, and academics. Rather than accepting those limitations, we decided to create our own solution.
What began as a conversation over breakfast became a 26-day career tour spanning multiple cities and industries. With the support of our parents, who believed in our vision from day one, we visited 18 organizations, including professional sports franchises, Fortune 500 companies, and industry-leading organizations. Along the way, we created our own version of "mini internships," gaining exposure to careers and leaders we otherwise may never have encountered.
Thanks to the power of LinkedIn and the willingness of Michigan alumni and professionals across the country to open their doors, an unconventional idea became a reality.
What makes this story especially meaningful is what happened next.
Over time, that student-led initiative evolved into a fully funded and highly selective Career Venture program, providing current University of Michigan student-athletes, and now student-athletes across the Big Ten and NCAA, with immersive career exploration, professional development, and industry access opportunities.
Looking back, I am incredibly proud that an idea born from curiosity, resourcefulness, and a desire to create opportunity has continued to impact future generations of student-athletes.
A sincere thank you to the parents, mentors, alumni, and industry leaders who believed in two student-athletes with a vision long before there was a program.
Proof that sometimes the most impactful ideas begin with a simple question:
"What if we built it ourselves?"
